Moses spent much of his early life on a farm in southern Illinois. He came out to California at the request of his brother John who had found them work in Willits with the railroad. He stepped off the train into 6 inches of snow and wondered what he had gotten himself into in California but he stayed. He started work as a lumber grader for the Northwestern Mill. Later he worked for NWP RR and Pacific North Coast RRs as a fireman. Moses partnered with his father in 1919 and formed J.D. Metzler & Son and worked with his dad until Jesse died in 1940. In 1946 Moses took as a partner his son Richard H. Metzler and changed the name of the store to M.P. Metzler & Son. This partnership continued until Moses retired in 1964. Moses served on the local office of Price Administration and the rationing Board during WWII and served for many years as Deputy Mendocino County Clerk. He was a driving force behind the Golden Gate Bridge District formation that pushed through the bridge to Northern California. An avid fisherman and at one time holder of the largest privately owned game bird aviary in the state - Moses loved nature.
