On Christmas Night, 1914, Ernest Rawles, Fred Rawles, and Beryl Rawles attended a dance held in Philo that degenerated into a brawl between the Boonville and Philo contingents. This much celebrated event is still talked about today by the residents of Anderson Valley. The following is an article that appeared in the Ukiah Dispatch Democrat on Jan. 18, 1915 (p. 1, col. 3):

"Attorney Weldon Tries Anderson Cases
Attorney T.J. Weldon was sent to Anderson valley the first of the week to prosecute the cases against the Rawles boys in the justice court there, they having been arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace. Ernest Rawles was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of $50 or serve 50 days in jail. He has appealed his case to the Superior court. Fred Rawles was granted a change of venue to the Ukiah justice court. Beryl Rawles was dismissed, the jury disagreeing [sic] his case. Geo. Clow, who was floor manager at the Philo dance where the trouble occured [sic], was arrested at the instance [sic] of Beryl Rawles and was tried before the court without jury, being dismissed. Mr. Weldon defended in this case."

Ernest wrote a poem about the dance/brawl, titled The Devil's Dance.

Married Jane Eloise Wallach on Monday, June 13, 1919, in Santa Rosa, Ca.

E.E. Rawles retired from the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power System in 1962 after 42 years of service. For many years, Ernest and Eloise lived in a house on Second Street in Oakdale, California. When his son John completed the construction of a ranch house outside of Oakdale in about 1968, Ernest and Eloise purchased and moved to John's previous home on Magnolia Avenue in Oakdale. It was there that they lived the remaining years of their lives.

Ernest was a member of the Oakdale Masonic Lodge F&AM #275, Scotish Rite Bodies of Stockton, AAHMES Shrine of Oakland, and the Oakdale Shrine Club. Republican. Had advanced Alzheimer's disease at the time of his death. He died at the age of 88 following a prolonged battle with cancer.]
