Adopted son. The parents of Newman, John, and Robert Squires died. Initially, they were adopted by James Rankin Crow. They came west with the Crow family in 1852. Sometime after arriving in California, Newman and John Squires were adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley McAbee, who came out west in the same wagon train as the Crows. Presumably, Robert was the oldest of the three boys and thus he was of legal age at the time that Newman and Johnny were adopted by the McAbees.
